Featuring Jéssica Frazão, Sissi Valente, and Wellington Sari, “Words about Images” showcases their latest books, each stemming from in-depth research on prominent filmmakers: Werner Herzog, Ozualdo Candeias, and Brian De Palma, respectively. This panel discussion explores the possibilities for film analysis and theoretical exploration surrounding the cinematic styles of these directors. The event marks the launch of the 4th year of the “Writing Cinema” Collection.

>Marcelo Miranda

Marcelo Miranda is a journalist, film critic, researcher, and curator, holding a Master’s degree in Communication from UFMG. He contributes to magazines such as “Cinética”, “Teorema”, and “Abismu”, as well as the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”. Marcelo has authored texts in catalogs and books dedicated to filmmakers and artists such as Clint Eastwood, Alfred Hitchcock, John Carpenter, Charles Chaplin, Howard Hawks, Luis Buñuel, Tim Burton, Monsters in Cinema, Stephen King, among others. He is the creator of the podcast “Bag of Bones”, devoted to horror fiction in Brazil, and is also a member of the “Fright Night” podcast. Currently, Marcelo serves as the President of Abraccine (Brazilian Association of Film Critics) for the 2021-2023 term.

Speakers

Wellington Sari

Wellington Sari is a filmmaker, researcher, and professor. He holds a master's degree in Film and Video Arts from the State University of Paraná (Unespar) and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in History at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), specializing in Art, Memory, and Narrative. As one of the founders of the film production company O Quadro, he has directed the feature film "Bia Mais Um" (2021) along with several short films. Additionally, he serves as the director of the Metrô – Brazilian University Film Festival.

Sissi Valente

Sissi Valente holds a Ph.D. in History from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and a Master's degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). She previously served as a university professor at UFPR and the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG). Currently, she works as a researcher in film and audiovisual studies and is also an author and editor of educational content in History and Visual Arts.

Jéssica Frazão

Jéssica Frazão is a film researcher and professor. She earned her Master's degree in Communication from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and her Ph.D. in Audiovisual Media and Processes from the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo (ECA-USP). Currently, she teaches in the Film and Audiovisual program at the University of Joinville (Univille). Additionally, she is a member of the research groups "History of Experimentation in Film and Criticism" (ECA-USP) and "Humanitas - Research Center on Epistemologies, Practices, and Interdisciplinary Knowledge" (UFSC).
