In this year’s Competitive section, as is traditional, we have representatives with prominent participations in some of the world’s leading film festivals, such as Venice and Sundance, including the winners of the main competitions in San Sebastian and Rotterdam. These films explore languages from fiction to documentary and draw a panorama of the main issues affecting the world and, more particularly, contemporary cinema. Furthermore, all three films representing Brazil in the competition, one world premiere and two national debuts, were made by women filmmakers: ‘Home’, ‘Landless’, and ‘Let it Burn’.

The New Views competitive section once again allows us to experience films that explore and expand the boundaries of cinematographic genres, challenging the viewer to reflect upon their own bearing when confronting these thought-provoking works. Some of these films come from festivals such as Berlin, Rotterdam, or Sundance, having crossed the oceans from Canada to Japan, passing through India, Spain, and France. The Brazilian representative in this section, ‘The Yellow Night’, will finally premiere in Brazil following its screenings in Rotterdam Festival and Indie Lisboa.

Last but not least, the Other Views competitive section is a space where the festival broadly reflects upon the social and human dilemmas of our time, and which find in the cinema its most powerful resonance chamber. As in the other sections, here we also come across films with renowned international standing, which combine fictions and documentaries from the most diverse corners of the world. Within this rich space for political and social questionings, among the four Brazilian films selected, two made their presence felt in two of the most significant global festivals: ‘Indianara’ arrives less than two weeks before its world premiere in a parallel exhibition at the Cannes Film Festival, while ‘Your Turn’ earned the Amnesty International and Peace awards in Berlin. The Brazilian contribution concludes with the film ‘The White Color’ with its world premiere at Olhar and ‘While We Are Here’ with recent passages at the Art of the Real and Rotterdam.
