Synopsis
The second installment of the director’s “coming of age” trilogy, the film tracks the protagonist, known as Ah-ha, through his childhood and adolescence in Taiwan from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Shot in the city where he grew up, the feature film draws not only from the memories of Hou Hsiao-hsien but also features narration by the director himself. Despite being his sixth feature film, it was the first to be screened at one of the world’s most important film festivals (Berlin), marking the period when Hou believes he solidified his distinctive cinematic style.
