Synopsis

A decade later, precisely at the turn of the millennium, Vicky reminisces about moments from her youth, particularly her romantic relationships, many of which were frustrating and sometimes abusive. In this film, Hou Hsiao-hsien accomplishes the remarkable feat of portraying the present as if it were a memory, bolstered by the simultaneously melancholic and luminous performance of his lead actress, Shu Qi. Regarded as a milestone of early 21st-century cinema, and despite being the director’s fourteenth feature film it proved to be one of the most directly influential works for many filmmakers worldwide, including in Brazil.
