Synopsis
Continuing an extensive audiovisual research project centered on Rio de Janeiro’s port region, Julia De Simone embarks on her debut fictional feature film, intertwining timelines around the area of Cais do Valongo. Featuring Muanza as the protagonist, a woman born in Congo and brought to Brazil through enslavement, the film navigates encounters between characters and landscapes that underscore both the enduring cruelty of Brazil’s colonial past and the resilience and bonds forged by the Afro-Brazilian community, with a special emphasis on women.
