Synopsis
The narrator claims to be a hippopotamus. Although he doesn’t perceive the passage of time, he shares stories from his past. Pepe, the first and only hippopotamus to die in the Americas, is portrayed by different voices and languages throughout the film, conveying stories from the places he has traveled. Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias presents a film with a sharp sense of humor and inventive storytelling, constantly reinventing itself through various devices, approaches, and memories spanning from Africa to the Americas. Nelson De Los Santos Arias is a Dominican filmmaker. He studied cinema at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, Edinburgh College of Art, and received his MFA at CalArts. "The Carriage" (2013) was included in the major Latin America art exhibition in the U.S. at the Guggenheim. "Santa Teresa" (2015) premiered at FidMarseille winning the Prix Georges De Beauregard. "Cocote" (2017) premiered in Locarno, winning the Golden Leopard in the Signs of Life category. "Pepe" won the Silver Bear for Best Director in Berlin.
