Synopsis
“Between the sky and the airplanes, we don’t know where the people are”. The woman speaking these words seems to stand amidst mountainous terrain, with a machine gun by her side. The airplanes she refers to are the military aircraft of the Israeli state. In the colonized territory of Palestine, women’s armed resistance emerges as a central dimension of political activism. Saab’s film, part of a series of her short documentaries about Israeli offensives in both Palestine and Lebanon, engages in conversations with several of these women to explore the intersections between resistance, formal education, and armed struggle in defense of their land. Director
Jocelyne Saab
Jocelyne Saab was born in Lebanon in 1948, the same year when Palestine was confined within its own territory. Her incursion into filmmaking began during the 15 years of the long-drawn-out Lebanese Civil War. Throughout this tumultuous period, Saab directed nearly 30 films, passionately engaged in direct-action cinema, capturing the unfolding events firsthand. Transitioning into the 1980s, Saab ventured into experimenting with fiction, crafting narratives where fictional elements intertwine with documentary storytelling. She also served as a film professor and dedicated efforts to archive preservation, actively supporting the reconstruction of the Lebanese Cinematheque.
