Synopsis
Nie Yinniang is an assassin in 7th-century China tasked with killing the military governor of a Chinese province, Tian Ji’na. However, he happens to be her cousin, whom she has loved since childhood, leading to doubts about her ability to carry out the only job she knows. In what unfortunately became his final feature film, Hou Hsiao-hsien engages with the tradition of wu xia, the traditional Chinese martial arts narratives, infusing his highly recognizable visual and sonic style into this popular genre. For this work, he won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival. (E.V.)

Born in 1947, filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien stands as one of the leading voices of what became known as "Taiwan New Cinema", a movement that took the international film scene by storm in the 1980s. Among his contemporaries from that period, he boasts the longest and most distinguished career, with all of his films since the late 1980s being featured at major festivals worldwide. Over the course of his impressive artistic journey, he has directed 18 feature films, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential filmmakers of the past 40 years.
