Among the many somewhat magical powers of cinema, historical foresight is one of the most mysterious. When Dea Ferraz decided to station her camera inside a rural workers union to portray its archaic historical structures, creating a gap in the contemporaneity between worker and society, she could not imagine that her film would arrive at the cinemas during a convoluted and desperate time in the country’s history from the perspective of the less powerful. A precious historical document thus assumes the dimension of a clairvoyant manifest about a country that chooses to ignore its own origin as it looks ahead towards an uncertain future.
