Machines is a film made with modest intentions, masterful craft, and indelible heart. Director Rahul Jain observationally profiles a textile factory in the Gujarat province of his native India by alternating brief bombardments of workday sounds and images with pointed, insightful testimony from workers about their relations to their jobs. The film moves respectfully between immersion and reflection, then leaves the visit’s meaning up to us.
