The only feature film directed by Júlio Calasso is an unknown masterpiece exploring in flashback the achievements and failures of coffee farmer and human monster Coronel Orestes (a fierce performance by Othon Bastos) in the São Paulo hinterland. When discussing the film in the book Cinema de Invenção, Jairo Ferreira wrote, “Longo Caminho da Morte was certainly some twenty years ahead of its time, when black clouds still left sparse silver linings in the best experimental minds of our cinema.”
