Reha Erdem is a spectacular filmmaker, and Big Big World is a jewel in his crown. The Turkish director’s ninth feature weaves a fairy tale out of an escape made by an orphaned adult brother and teen sister from dangerous civilization into forest. It is a film painfully relevant to discussions of Turkish society and politics today, one made up of lyrical movements that frighten with a possibility of violence around them and lull with a hope for peace.

Reha Erdem

Reha Erdem directed his first feature film, “Oh, MOON!”, in 1989. Since then he has won multiple awards with titles such as “Times and winds” (2006), “My only Sunshine” (2009) and “Kosmos” (2010). His two most recent feature films were both released in 2013 to wide acclaim: “Jin” (Berlinale) and “Singingwomen” (2013, Toronto, Special Presentation).
