The demon Mephisto wagers with God that he can corrupt a mortal man’s soul. The subject of their wager (in this free adaptation of Goethe’s play) becomes Faust, an aging German alchemist who is tempted by the promise of immortality.

 

Director

F. W. MURNAU

The German director F. W. Murnau (1888-1931) studied philosophy, literature, music, and history of the arts. His best-known films are “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”, “The Last Laugh” and “Faust”. Murnau’s masterpiece was the movie “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” in 1927.
